It’s the New Year – a time of starting out fresh, making new choices and of course, New Year resolutions. However, each year, so many people see those resolutions decline or even disappear before they even get started.

Why can’t we make those resolutions stick?

Oftentimes, it has to do with how we are set up for success (or how you are not). Here are four easy steps to succeed and make those resolutions stick:

  1. Let go of what no longer serves you. Whether that’s clutter, tempting foods or other distractions, clean them up and out. The more merciless you are in this cleanup, the easier your days will be and the more likely you are to focus on what makes a positive difference.
  2. Understand why you want to make a change…then make it as emotionally charged and personal as possible. Most people give up on their goals because they are unable to stay motivated. When you tie your goals to what you really want, your chances of success increase. “I want to lose 10 pounds” is not nearly as motivating as “I want to feel comfortable in my favorite jeans,” or “I want to run a 5K this year.”
  3. Go for the easy wins first, then layer small changes on top of each other. Choose small manageable goals, make them a habit, then add on a new goal. An all or nothing mindset rarely works when making lasting change stick.
  4. Build awareness. Whether you call it tracking, journaling, logging – keeping track of your goals, your accomplishments and your obstacles can be key to succeeding.

Change IS possible – I see it every day. May your choices today reflect your dreams for tomorrow.
